McCann Manchester Spoofs Well-Known 2007 Cadbury Ad for Aldi

By Erik Oster

McCann Manchester launched a new spot for Aldi which parodies a 2007 ad Fallon London created for Cadbury.

Like that ad, McCann Manchester’s effort is promoting chocolate — in this case comparing Aldi’s chocolate Easter bunny offering to Lindt’s more expensive version. The spot is notable for playing on the quite recognizable Fallon London spot from 2007. Directed by Another Film Company’s Mark Denton, the spot opens on a gorilla in a blue room. As the camera pans out, it’s revealed the gorilla is sitting behind a drum set with Aldi’s chocolate Easter bunny next to Lindt’s as superpimposed text reveals the price difference. When he starts bashing away at the drums, it’s clear that he’s not quite as proficient on the instrument as the gorilla in the Cadbury spot aping Phil Collins, although he claims to be better at the piano. We’ve included the Fallon London spot for Cadbury below for comparison, although many readers are probably already familiar with it.
