Happy Father’s Day from Olde English Sketch Comedy

By Matt Van Hoven

I hope you all remembered to send your dads a coupon for one free lawn mowing. I believe I owe my parents breakfast in bed, but I think at this point that is out of the question on both ends. My old man doesn’t want me serving him breakfast until absolutely necessary.

I don’t blame him.

So this video is a bit odd, but I thought considering the general lameness of Father’s Day (Love you Dad!), it was only fitting.

More on the interview with the dudes that make it all happen, Olde English Sketch Comedy, after the jump.

Me: Tell me about your crew (read: who the hell are you weirdos)? Tell me about you (read: you seem committed, I’m intrigued).

Davig Segal, Co-director-writer-actor on the other end of an e-mail: Well, for starters there are five of us: Caleb Bark, Ben Popik, Adam Conover, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, and myself (David Segal). We all went to Bard College in the Hudson Valley where we started the group as a sketch/improv troupe in late 2002, but quickly found video sketch to be our best suit. After graduating we re-located to NYC, with an emphasis in Brooklyn, and have just kept doing what we do.

Me: Motivation for the O’Doul’s bit (see it here)

Segal: Just to make a funny rap song. We loved the idea of these characters who just don’t have a clue what they’re talking about, and somehow manage to misconstrue every piece of information they get.

Come on, you guys were sponsored by SOMEONE, right?

3. No. Neither O’Doul’s nor it’s parent companies had anything to do with the making of the video. I would also guess that they’re not interested in advertising themselves as an extremely alcoholic beer. The video was produced for SuperDeluxe. A comedy video website under the Turner umbrella that is sadly on its way down the drain.

Me: Olde English Sketch Comedy? How’d that happen?

Segal: The story on the name as I remember it is that it was Ben’s favorite brand of malt liquor at the time (I believe he’s since realized he’s allergic to alcohol). But we have no affiliation with the company.

The line-up.
