Halo’s Master Chief Graduates College

By Bob Marshall

If you’re the kind of nerd I am (a big one), you probably have a thing for video game commercials. In 2007, the gaming world was waiting with eager anticipation for Halo 3, the successful, iconic series’ first installment for the XBOX 360. With the game came one of video games’ greatest spots, “Believe” done by McCann SF. If you need a refresher on the 90 second cinematic masterpiece, you can watch it here.

Comparing this “Guess Who’s Coming to College?” to “Believe” is, admittedly, unfair. After all, CP+B’s latest spot for Microsoft isn’t for a product launch, but merely for a PC/XBOX bundle deal targeting college youth who need a laptop and video game console for their dorm rooms (which, as one YouTube commenter notes, isn’t very apparent). But, when you have a spokesperson like Master Chief at your disposal, the sky is the limit. Then again, I’m video game ad nerd and not a Halo nerd. So, maybe just a surprise appearance from Master Chief is enough to make this deal compete with the annual MacBook/iPod deal Apple offers to college students. Any rapid Halo fanatics out there think so?
