Today in Tha Lulz, Goodby Silverstein & Partners’ latest effort for Frito-Lay’s Grandma Cookies deals with a very fundamental human question: Are YOU my grandma?
No, really…are you?
People of all ages are confused thanks, primarily, to the rhetorical warm cozy blanket that is a cold, packaged cookie.
The misplaced nostalgia phenomenon can occur anywhere–and it doesn’t discriminate based on race, age or gender. First, it can happen in the park.
It can also bring young, unsuspecting kids together in really awkward ways.
See, it’s really all about the sensory stimuli. It’s a smell adults have grown to love!
That one took a turn toward the creepy. Also, respect to all the accountants who have served as boring stock characters in everything since forever. They can’t all grow up to be British knights making dozens of millions and hanging out with Richard Branson.
Finally, the gender identity thing continues to be an issue.
Regarding the strategy behind this campaign, the press release tells us that “[Grandma’s has] never done anything to connect its brand to the nostalgia, warmth and coziness that grandmas make us feel. After 100 years of making cookies, [GS&P] thought it was high time they did.”
We are, of course, completely unqualified to discuss whether the ads we post on are actually good or not. But screw it, we liked this take on the kids’ tome “Are You My Mother?” which may have also gotten some inspiration from this classic 2001 Cormega joint.
Who even knows?!
