After an 11-year battle with cancer, word comes that Andrew Jaffe, former editorial director at Adweek, has died at the age of 71. A Columbia J-school grad and one-time foreign correspondent for Newsweek, Jaffe joined Adweek in 1986 as an editor in its regional Atlanta base before moving to New York to take over as editorial director of the magazine’s six editions two years later.
Though he retired from Adweek in 2003 to start up his own consultancy in Connecticut, Jaffe nevertheless joined the board at VCU Brandcenter. In a statement, VCU director/professor Rick Boyko says Jaffe introduced “Dentsu to the Brandcenter and then helped design and implement our first custom executive education program for Dentsu. Andrew took personal responsibility for the excellence of this program and along with Peter Coughter and myself, traveled to Tokyo to participate in the training all three years.”
During his tenure at Adweek, Jaffe was responsible for starting conferences and other brand extensions. In 1997, he managed the pub’s acquisition of the Clio Awards and ran it for the next six years. According to the release, his family requests that in Jaffe’s memory people consider a charitable contribution to the Andrew Jaffe Scholarship Fund at the Brandcenter, Virginia Commonwealth University or to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.
