Chandelier Heads Back to School with Old Navy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus

By Erik Oster

Chandelier brought back Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus for its back-to-school campaign for Old Navy.

The new spots cast Louis-Dreyfus, who took over for Amy Poehler last December, as an overbearing mom humiliating her pre-teen son while driving him to school. It’s a good fit for the actress, and “First Day of School Style” is easily her best for the brand so far. The ad shows her character’s son opining that all the other kids look cool for the first day of school while he looks like the family’s lawyer. After asking the youngsters where they got their clothes, much to her son’s horror, she decides that he’ll be late for the first day following an excursion to Old Navy. It’s a funny, easily relatable premise, and the ad concludes with what is the closest Chandelier has come to making its run-to-the-store ending seem like a natural conclusion to the action, not exactly an easy feat. The 30-second “Picture-Day Denim” follows a similar formula, but doesn’t hit quite the same comedic notes. As usual, the brand released a pair of outtakes videos along with the ads, which we’ve included below.
