72andSunny Teams Up with Cast of Barbershop: The Next Cut for SportsCenter at Night

By Erik Oster

Last September, 72andSunny celebrated the new midnight version of SportsCenter with a spot promoting SportsCenter’s late night editions starring the Washington Nationals mascots called “Presidents.” SportsCenter, of course, typically works with W+K New York, but is treating the promotion of its late night editions as a separate project which seems to have been secured by 72andSunny, who EPSN previously worked with on a campaign promoting ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. Now, nearly seven months after the initial effort, 72andSunny teamed up with the cast of the upcoming (April 15) Barbershop sequel Barbershop: The Next Cut for 30-second and 15-second ads promoting the late night edition of SportsCenter.

In the 30-second spot, entitled “Legends,” Ice Cube, Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer argue over who is the best basketball team to ever play the game over a barbershop visit, prompted by a viewing of the late night edition of SportsCenter. In “Barbershop MVP,” meanwhile, Cedric knocks reigning NBA MVP Steph Curry. While in both cases the humor falls fairly flat, the ads fairly convincingly work in the Barbershop connection, as it’s pretty easy to imagine the characters arguing over an airing of SportsCenter. Plus “End Your Day on a Highlight” is a pretty perfect tagline for the brand.
