180LA, Expedia Allow St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital Patients to ‘Dream Adventure’

By Erik Oster

180 LA teamed up with Expedia to provide cancer patients at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital with the opportunity to see the world in a new campaign.

Since patients at the hospital are often there for months or even years, they don’t really have an opportunity to travel…so 180 LA and Expedia decided to bring the world to them with a 360-degree experience.

Viewers are introduced to Kiara, a St. Jude’s patient with an abiding love for horses. Interspersed with footage of Kiara being wheeled in to the hospital’s screening room for the experience is that of an Expedia employee in Argentina, preparing to take footage of wild horses. The experience doesn’t just let Kiara see the wild horses, but also to interact with the Expedia employee and feel like she’s really there. Other experiences allow a dinosaur-loving boy interact with an archeologist digging up fossils, while another gets a view from under the ocean.

It’s a heartwarming approach, with 180LA Expedia providing the children with a great experience undoubtedly brightening their day while also showing viewers the power of travel.

Arriving on the heels of W+K’s Portland’s VR-fueled “Together We Are Stronger,” the effort similarly employs new technology to provide people with an experience which otherwise wouldn’t be possible. In both cases, the approach is emotionally effective and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the trend continue with other ads this year.
