Why people thought Ashlee was ghastlee

Jasimpson Not to overthink Ashlee Simpson’s career or anything, but here’s my theory as to why she was so soundly booed after her performance at halftime of the Orange Bowl—excuse me—the FedEx Orange Bowl. While most reports have blamed her performance (it was nothing to write home about, but not the worst you’ll ever see), I’m blaming the fact that fewer and fewer people believe her faux-goth schtick. (During her performance, she was even surrounded by black-clad “cheerleaders.” Yuck.)

It’s not just the infamous lip-synching episode on Saturday Night Live; it’s the whole Jessica vs. Ashlee thing, too. Every time I look at her, all I can think is that her managers sat in a room, looked at one sister, then at the other, and said, “OK, we’ll make one blonde and wholesome, and the other black-haired and naughty. There’ll be a Simpson for everyone!”

Just like soda flavors.
