Putting Jenny Craig to the test

Fatactress_1Kirstie Alley’s quasi-reality show Fat Actress premieres on Showtime at 10 o’clock tonight, and if the preview clips are any indication, plan on seeing Alley doing a lot of whining about her weight and languishing career to celebrity pals like John Travolta. In one scene, she lies on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably, after her agent calls to tell her that someone finally wants her for a job: Jenny Craig. The crying turns into a piercing wail. In real life, Alley is doing a happy dance. She’s turned what Hollywood would consider an unsellable feature—her 200-pound figure—into a vehicle for a comic comeback. It’s refreshing to see an overweight celebrity face the camera and say, “I’m fat!”—as she unapologetically exclaims in her Jenny Craig commercials. It’ll be interesting to see if her real-life Jenny Craig diet melts off the pounds and how the series will eventually evolve if she ever gets back down to her Cheers weight. And for those who want an even closer view of her diet drama, read her Jenny Craig journal, linked to Showtime’s Web site.
