The Golden Globes’ embrace of Ang Lee and Brokeback Mountain should have the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bracing for yet another year of sagging Heartland Oscars viewership, as Hollywood applauds its own politics rather than movies that are relevant to actual moviegoers. That is, unless this new Academy Awards trailer manages to do its job. The trailer, which shows recent Oscar-broadcast clips of Tom Hanks sentiment, Carrie Fisher comedy, Halle Berry breakdown and Julia Roberts unsmudging Clint Eastwood, reduces the coffee-cooler talk to 30 seconds and makes one wonder why the increasingly labored telecast can’t just cut to the chase.
