Even if we don’t watch much TV these days, it’s still good fun
to read stories that try to get inside the minds of TV programming executives,
such as Lynn Hirschberg’s piece in The New York Times Magazine last Sunday on
CBS’ Les Moonves. Though the story has plenty of insight into Moonves’
programming philosophy and interesting asides (like that he has instructed his
wife, CBS “Early Show” anchor Julie Chen, to write down programming ideas he
mumbles about in his sleep), it sketches a picture of broadcast TV as essentially
a three-network universe (well, four, if you count CBS sibling UPN).
