Michael Fassbender Is Almost Human in Freaky 'Prometheus' Ad Any company could use an automaton like him
Do you lie awake at night trying to figure out which of your co-workers are really incredibly lifelike robots who are spying on you for the company? Other than human-resources people, I mean. Cue this fun promo-within-a-promo clip for Ridley Scott's Alien prequel Prometheus, which hits theaters in June. In the film, Michael Fassbender plays an automaton created by creepy futuristic firm Weyland Industries. Here, he stars in a corporate "sales video," boasting, "I can make your organization more efficient … I can carry out directives that my human counterparts might find [pause] distressing … [pause] or unethical." Put this mechanical marvel in charge of the accounting department! Fassbender looks like a cross between a lean, young Arnold Schwarzenegger and a serial killer—I mean that as praise, given the nature of the role—and his sweetly precise, slightly too controlled delivery is absolute perfection. His responses to an off-camera questioner about what he ponders all day—"children playing," "angels," "the universe"—are especially unsettling. He reels off the list as Rorschach imagery appears on screen, suggesting that some screws are loose, and that this servo-driven salaryman is teetering on the edge of a meltdown. "I understand human emotions, although I do not feel them myself," he says. Clearly, he's management material.
