BuzzFeed's feature-length explanation of How 50 Big Companies Got Their Names is very illuminating. In many cases, the origins are more humble than one would expect. Adobe was named after a creek running behind the founder's house, for example, and Atari is a term in the game Go for when an opponent's pieces are in danger. Some of them are more random, like Bridgestone being a semi-literal translation of the Japanese founder's last name, and Reebok being based off the name of some kind of African antelope.
