At first blush, New Line's decision to develop a new Mortal Kombat movie seems like a coup for YouTube's many filmmaking superfans. If one fan's self-financed short film (below) can go viral and spark a major movie deal, surely that bodes well for the guys obsessing over Super Mario Bros. and Left 4 Dead, right? Well, not quite. The Mortal Kombat short was actually made by Hollywood veteran Kevin Tancharoen, who choreographed for Madonna, directed the Fame remake and filmed a recent concert film for Glee.
