Amazon, GM and Volvo Are Now Offering In-Car Delivery in the U.S.

Amazon Prime members with compatible vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Volvo can have packages delivered directly to their cars. In-car delivery is available in 37 U.S. cities and surrounding areas—including Atlanta, Austin, Houston, L.A., Miami, Nashville, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle and Washington, D.C.—and to customers with a compatible 2015 or newer car model with an active OnStar or Volvo On Call account. Amazon said support for more vehicle makes and models will be added over time. To receive deliveries, Prime members download the Amazon Key app and link their Amazon accounts with their connected car service accounts. They do not need to purchase and install an Amazon Key Home Kit for in-car deliveries. Once setup is complete and the delivery location has been registered, Amazon customers can select the in-car delivery option at checkout. On delivery day, the Amazon Key app allows customers to check if they’ve parked within range of the delivery location and provides notifications such as when the delivery is on its way and when the package has been delivered. Customers can also track when their car was unlocked and relocked in the app’s activity feed and rate the delivery. Amazon says it uses multiple layers of verification to ensure the security of these deliveries. “Each time a delivery driver requests access to a customer’s vehicle, Amazon verifies that an authorized driver is at the right location with the right package through an encrypted authentication process,” the platform said. “Once this process is successfully completed, the car is then unlocked. Customers receive a notification via the Amazon Key App after the delivery is completed and the vehicle is relocked.” Volvo has been offering in-car delivery in Sweden and Switzerland since 2015 for model years 2012 and later and customers who have a valid Volvo On Call subscription. “Simplification of experience for our consumers is central to Volvo’s digital vision," said Atif Rafiq, chief digital officer at Volvo Cars. "Receiving a package securely and reliably in your car without you having to be there is something we think many people will appreciate.” Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America, said in a statement that in-car delivery would be available for more than 7 million GM customers, calling it "another great example of how we are leveraging the embedded connectivity in our vehicles to provide our customers with services that make their ownership experience more valuable." Amazon Key, which launched in November 2017, enables in-home delivery and keyless access for guests. It will eventually also include access for providers in Amazon Home Services incuding cleaning, handyman and yard work services.
